COLONEL EUGENE L. EGRY, III, CAP
Colonel Eugene (Gene) L. Egry III, is the Vice Commander / South of Civil Air Patrol’s Middle East Region, serving in this role since October 2018. Col Egry joined CAP as a cadet in June 1979 and completed the cadet program, earning the General Ira C. Eaker Award.
As a cadet, he held various cadet command and staff positions throughout his CAP career: cadet commander, Squadron 805; member of Pennsylvania Wing Ranger staff since 1980, holding various cadet leadership and command positions in the Ranger program. He served as the cadet commander of the 1983 Pennsylvania Wing Encampment for which he received his first Commander’s Commendation. As a senior member, he held various command and staff positions. Squadron 805 Commander (recognized as the 1992 Northeast Region “Squadron of Distinction”), Deputy Group 80 Commander, Group 80 Commander, Deputy Group 3 Commander / North, Group 3 Commander, Member at Large for the Pennsylvania Wing Standards and Planning Committee for Ground Search and Rescue, Pennsylvania Wing Director of Ranger Staff Training, Member of the Pennsylvania Wing Executive Committee, Pennsylvania Wing Director of Operations, Pennsylvania Wing Vice Commander, Delaware Wing Vice Commander and Middle East Region Chief of Staff.
He served as the Commander of the Delaware Wing from September 2007 to September 2011. As Wing Commander, he was responsible to carry out CAP’s missions with the over 500 members, 8 aircraft and 10 vehicles in his Wing. He gained valuable knowledge regarding the financial processes and importance of being a steward of corporate assets during his tenure in CAP. He served as the Chief of Staff of the Middle East Region from October 2004 to October 2008.
He is an active participant in the emergency services mission of CAP, holding several mission qualifications which include: Incident Commander, Ground Team Leader and Mission Observer. He is a certified Emergency Responder in Maryland.
He was a member of State Champion Team for the Pennsylvania Wing Ranger Team Competition (1988 and 1989). He received his certification as a rappelling instructor in 1989, 1991, and 1993 by Air Force para rescue instructors and earned his Rope 1 and 2 certifications by the Pennsylvania Fire Academy. He earned the Pennsylvania Wing Senior Ranger Team Commander – Land Search and Rescue proficiency grade of SRTC Rescue Land in 1993. He is a graduate of the National Search and Rescue School – Inland Search and Rescue Course and two AFRCC SMC courses. He served as the Ground Operations Director for the Pennsylvania Wing in 1990 and 1992 for the Northeast Region SAR Competition. The team was selected as the #1 Mission Coordinator Team. He is a graduate of the 2008 National Inspector General College.
He served as the director of two National Cadet Special Activities as commander of the 2002 and 2003 Summer Ranger School at Hawk Mountain Pennsylvania. He served as the Northeast Region representative to the National Headquarters Development Committee (2004 – 2005). He currently serves as one of the CAP LNO to FEMA NRCC where he recently supported several natural disasters such as the 2016 and 2017 historic flooding in North and South Carolina.
He holds Master ratings in Cadet Programs, Emergency Services, Aerospace Education and Command as well as a Senior rating in Safety. He earned CAP’s highest senior member training award in 1993, the Gill Robb Wilson Award (#1545).
During his distinguished CAP career, he has been recognized with several awards and commendations. He received seven Commander’s Commendations, two Meritorious Service Awards, four Exceptional Service Awards, and a Distinguished Service Award. He earned the Expert Ranger Award (#146), the highest proficiency grade awarded by the Pennsylvania Wing Ranger Program. He was recognized during the 1991 Northeast Region Staff College with the “Lamp Lighter” Award for most outstanding student.
A native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, he moved to Maryland in 2004 to pursue a career opportunity at GEICO Insurance Company. He is a manager in the IT department currently managing a team of 30 developers and analysts responsible for Human Resources and Payroll Systems.
Col Egry is an Information Technology professional with over 32 years of experience. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from Lehigh County Community College, a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Computer Science from Kutztown University. He served as an adjunct instructor at DeSales University where he taught undergraduate computer science courses for 10 years. He earned his Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute. Shortly after moving to Maryland in 2004, he joined the Montgomery County Chapter of PMI. In 2005, he became the Vice President of Membership and served in that position until December 2013. In 2015, he was elected to his current role as the Vice President of Treasury and Finance.
