Vice Commander – East
GERARD W. WEISS, CAP
Col. Gerard (Jerry) W. Weiss was assigned vice commander of the Middle East Region of Civil Air Patrol on October 24, 2014. He has direct responsibility for three of the seven wings in the region – Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia – and also has the A3-Operations directorate as a direct report. He is concurrently assigned as a liaison to the FEMA National Resource Coordination Center in Washington, DC. He ensures that the wings within his area remain compliant and mission ready to perform the three primary missions of emergency service, cadet programs and aerospace education.
Colonel Weiss was born in Ridgewood, NY. He attended DeSales University, graduating with honors. He holds a Bachelors Degree in History with a Teaching Certificate. He completed his MS from the School of Engineering at the Boise State University with a degree in Instructional and Performance Technology.
He has held command positions at the squadron, group and wing level and numerous other staff assignments. He is a rated ground team leader, senior mission observer, and incident commander with thousands of mission sorties. He served on National Cadet Special Activity staffs. He holds master ratings in Operations, Cadet Programs, Emergency Services, and Plans and Programs.
He is a retired US Army Officer with assignments that include Mechanized Infantry Battalion commander, Infantry Battalion executive officer, Infantry Battalion S3 operations officer and Air Operations Officer and Infantry Company commander. After retirement he worked in the private sector as a chief operating officer for a not-for-profit organization. He returned to the Department of the Army as a civilian in May 2005 and retired as the Chief of Operations at the Army Research Laboratory in January 2015.
He is married to Maryanne Janus Weiss; they have four adult children, three granddaughters and reside in York, Pennsylvania.
